Welcome to Kosher Shmeat- Is Shmeat Kosher? Follow the debate here

Welcome to the blog dedicated to Kosher Shmeat.  Shmeat is another term for Lab Grown Meat.  There are many benefits Shmeat has over traditional meat.

  • No Slaughter- A way for people who are ethically against the slaughtering of animals to get their meat fix, without feeling bad (The cells needed to produce in vitro meat or "Shmeat" can be harvested without harming any animals)
  • Environmentally Sustainable- A large proportion of agricultural land is actually used to grow feed for livestock rather than food for people (From CBC news).
  • No disease- Livestock are a breeding ground for disease epidemics like various influenza strains (anyone remember "MAD COW DISEASE"?)
  • Kosher?  TBD
Think about it, as long as the animal CAN be kosher, with Shmeat, there is no longer a need for ritual slaughtering or "Shechitah".

There is sure to be a lively debate about whether Shmeat can be Kosher.  I truly hope the kosher certification bodies get this right.

I look forward to posting from this blog in celebration when Shmeat is accepted as kosher once and for all!  Until then, my intention is to keep my audience informed of any new developments on the subject.
